Friends Hospital

A History of Healing

On 100 beautiful acres in Northeast Philadelphia stands Friends Hospital, one of America’s oldest hospitals and the first private non-profit institution in the country, founded exclusively to help persons with mental illness. When people come onto the grounds of Friends Hospital, we want them to feel that they have left the city and entered a quiet refuge where the process of healing the mind has taken place for centuries.

Guiding Patients on a Path to Wellness and Recovery

Located on a beautiful 100-acre campus, the nation’s first private psychiatric hospital continues to offer a quiet refuge where healing has taken place for more than two centuries. In 1813, the Quakers founded Friends Hospital based on the belief that all people can live a “moral, ordered existence if treated with kindness, dignity, and respect.”

Patient Testimonial

I learned a lot of things and what I want to do in life. To forgive people and let things go. How to cope with my emotions. This was a great experience for me.
